Zac Efron's Film We Are Your Friends Totally Bombed at the Box Office

Need more friends. Zac Efron's latest film We Are Your Friends turned out to be a total flop at the box office.

According to multiple outlets, the Working Title Films drama earned a painful $1.8 million from 2,333 locations for its Aug. 28 opening weekend. This makes it the worst opening ever for a major studio that shows a flick in 2,000 or more theaters.
Former Disney star Efron, 27, played a young DJ named Cole in the movie, who tries to break into the music industry. The flick was no match for Dr. Dre's Straight Outta Compton and War Room, which earned $13.2 million and $11 million, respectively. We Are Your Friends didn't even break into the top 10.

This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him," Warner Bros. exec VP, Jeff Goldstein, told THR in a statement. "Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film.” Efron has previously had success with hits such as Neighbors and The Lucky One.

Audiences may not have flocked to the theaters, but Efron did receive support from his loved ones. On Aug. 28, he shared a sweet photo of his grandparents next to the movie poster. "Shout out to Grandma and grandpa," he wrote. "First ones in line, opening night. Love you."


We Are Your Friends was directed by Catfish's Max Joseph. It also stars Wes Bentley, Gone Girl's Emily Ratajkowski, Jonny Weston, Shiloh Fernandez, Alex Shaffer, and Jon Bernthal.
